Carl Osteen Phillips Lynchburg Carl Osteen Phillips, age 75, died peacefully at his residence from complications of cancer on October 18, 2010, surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be 5pm, Thursday, October 21, 2010 at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Lynchburg, with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Floyd Funeral Home of Olanta. Visitation will be 6-8pm, tonight (Wednesday) at the funeral home. Born in Sumter County on July 2, 1935, he was a son of the late Cecil Osteen Phillips and Ada Dennis Phillips. Mr. Phillips graduated from Sherwood High School in Sumter County. He worked in the farm service industry for fifty years before retiring from Darlington Feed & Seed in 2005, a U.S. Army Veteran who served in the Army Reserves, a faithful member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday school teacher, choir member, Brotherhood Director and a Deacon for numerous terms. He was predeceased by his brother, Ellie Hugh Phillips. Surviving are his wife of 46 years, the former Lena Rodgers McNeill of Olanta. Two sons, Carl Wesley Phillips of Goose Creek and John Hector Phillips (Jennifer) of Turbeville. Two Grandchildren; Ellena Sophia Phillips and William Davenport Phillips of Turbeville. One brother; Rufus Phillips of Florence. Three sisters; Mae Kinard of Palm City, Florida; Mildred Hanczaryk of Richmond, Virginia; Bertie Prasco of Crown Point, Indiana as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank special friends, J.W. Altman, Beebe Coker, Brenda Young, Billy Griffith and a special family member, Jim Reynolds.
