Gwen M. Coker Turbeville Gwen Morris Coker, age 78, of Turbeville, passed away peacefully January 1, 2021 at MUSC in Florence, with her family and the compassionate 7th floor nursing staff by her bedside. Gwen was the daughter of the late Ellison Russell Morris, Jr., and Juanita Kirby Morris. Affectionally known as Darlin', she fought various illnesses over the last two years and more recently a brave battle with cancer. She graduated from East Clarendon High School and returned to Clarendon County School District #3 in her adult life to work with children as a kindergarden teacher's assistant and in the administrative offices until her retirement in 2004. She was a member of Great Commission Ministries. Darlin' enjoyed flowers, gardening, picking tangerines and blueberries from her fruit trees, riding her golf cart, watching HGTV, the Food Network, and The Andy Griffith Show. Most of all, she loved her family, friends, her church family and enjoyed gathering for dinner on Sundays. In addition to her parents, Gwen was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Howard D. "Pompy" Coker, brother Ronnie Morris, nephew Rodney Morris, brother-in-law Perry Coker, her husband's brothers and sisters, Cleo Coker, Burnette Coker, Janie Lee Coker, Jenny Moore, Lucky Coker, Jab Coker, and Betty Lou Atkinson. She is survived by her children Marsha (Melanie Buckingham) Coker of Greensboro, NC and the home, Isla Dawn Coker of Turbeville, and Doug (Melony) Coker of Turbeville. Also, her other children by choice, nephew Ronald Morris of the home and special family friend Jerry Briggs of Scranton. Darlin' also leaves behind her precious grandchildren, Jay Coker of California, Raven Coker (Alex Morris) of Florence, Paula "Doodle" Coker of Turbeville, Hunter Johnson of Turbeville and Galen Buckingham of Greensboro, NC, her loving sisters, Marie Morris of Turbeville, Margie (Mike)Lee of Sumter, Suzanne Coker of Turbeville, and Vicky Morris of Turbeville, brother-in-law Mutt Coker of Alcolu, very special nieces and nephews, Bert (Julie) Lee, Marta (Kyle) Holder, Rebecca (Evan) Anderson, Lynn (Marvin) Geddings, and Robin Moody, and many other treasured nieces, nephews, and cousins. She cherished her precious fur baby Scruffy. The family would like to thank Agape Hospice for their care and support, as well as Darlin's very special and longtime friends, Betty Ann Coker, Gerald McElveen, Hal Whitlock and Sharon Ross. In lieu of flower donations may be made to the Turbeville Children's Home in Turbeville, SC or the charity of one's choice. A graveside service will be held at 3:00pm Monday January 4, 2021 at Barrineau Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery directed by Floyd Funeral Home of Olanta. Due to COVID-19 concerns, no visitation will be held, but the family would enjoy speaking with family and friends following the service.
