OLANTA - James Herbert (J.H.) Moore, Jr. (89), passed into the arms of Jesus on August 23, 2024 at his home in Olanta. Born on November 10, 1934, he was the son of James Herbert Moore, Sr. and Myrdie Effie Carraway Moore. He was married to the love of his life, Mary Elizabeth (Libby) Watts Moore for 69 years and now they are reunited in Heaven. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, neighbor, uncle and friend. He loved his Lord Jesus Christ and witnessed to anyone he encountered. J.H. was a member of Turbeville Southern Methodist Church where he served as a Sunday School teacher of the Men’s Class, Trustee and on the Steward Board. He also served as a volunteer with Sumter County Fire Station #18 for many years and as a Gideon. J.H. farmed all his life with his lovely wife by his side. He farmed with his father and then his sons joined him as they got older. Later in life, before his retirement, he farmed with his grandson. All his grandchildren worked on the farm with him especially in the tobacco fields and around the barns as children and teens and ate many meals around his table. He loved his family and enjoyed family gatherings with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. All of his grandchildren called him “Granddaddy” and his great-grandchildren called him “PaPa”. He was known for playing with his great-grandchildren as they were growing up and even at the age of 89, he would get in the floor and play with his youngest great-granddaughter. He loved to tell stories of his childhood and his school years and loved a good joke. He also loved listening to Dr. David Jeremiah on TV and others as well. Those who will cherish his memory are two sons, James H. “Jimmy” (Ellen) Moore, III and William B. “Billy”(Fran) Moore of Olanta; five grandchildren, Jay Moore (Chanda) of Olanta, Michelle (Thomas) Andersen of Turbeville, Bernie (Mandy) Moore and Lee (Deidre) Moore of Lynchburg, and Trisha (Wheeler) McCallum of Blenheim; Eleven great-grandchildren, Taylor Moore, Haley Andersen (Zach Poston), Max Andersen, Brody Andersen, Ellee Andersen, Shay Hall (Carmen Hanna), Blake Moore, Drew Moore, Leah Moore, Payton Moore, and Gracielynn McCallum; two God-daughters Ashleigh (George) Knowlton and Carol Ann Griffith; one brother, Johnny (Linda) Moore, one sister, Anne (Terry) Prescott numerous nieces and nephews and those who were fortunate to work with the family in the summer whom he loved as family. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one great-grandson, Hunter Moore; one granddaughter-in-law, Michele Moore; two sisters, Adele Tomlinson and Uldean Watts. Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 26, 2024 at the Turbeville Southern Methodist Church at 2:00 p.m. Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 25, 2024 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Turbeville Southern Methodist Church and other times at the home, 11540 Douglas Swamp Road, Olanta. Burial will be private. Pallbearers will be Jay Moore, Bernie Moore, Lee Moore, Shay Hall, Blake Moore, Drew Moore, Max Andersen and Brody Andersen. The family would like to thank Dee Stegall and Tanya Smith of Amedysis Hospice in Sumter for their loving, tender care they gave to Mr. J.H. and the support to the family.
