Jean 'Jean Claire' K. Gibbons New Zion - Jean Claire Kennedy Burttram Gibbons, 75, passed away on April 5, 2016 at her home surrounded by her family and friends. She was born on October 7, 1940 in Sumter, SC to the late Wilbur Edward and Rubye Evans Kennedy. After graduating in 1958 from East Clarendon High School (Turbeville), she went on to earn a Bachelors (1962) and a Master's degree (1982) in Education from the University of South Carolina. She spent her entire career teaching young people in South Carolina, Alabama and California before retiring from Clarendon District #2 in 1993. She was an active member of New Zion United Methodist Church, where she held numerous teaching and officer positions. She was a leader of American Legion Auxiliary: as Unit 149 Past President, Auxiliary District 11 Past President, Department (state) President from 1999-2000. She served as National Executive Committeewoman and member of the Education Committee from the Department of South Carolina. She was also an Auxiliary member of the AFA, DAV, NAUS, TREA, VFW, and VVA. She was preceded in death by an infant brother and her sister, Patricia Kennedy Alford. Jean Claire is survived by her spouse Robert Butler 'Bobby' Gibbons, Jr. of New Zion; daughter, Paige Burttram (Terry) Belt of Chapin; son, Rob (Jennifer) Gibbons of Lexington; grandchildren Carey Morgan Belt, Jonah Bagnal Gibbons and Levi Kennedy Gibbons; former husband, James Hugh Burttram of Alabama; nephew, Andrew Alford and great niece Jenny of Bayboro, North Carolina. Visitation will be held at Floyd Funeral Home, 136 E. Main St, in Olanta, SC 29114 from 6 - 8 PM on Friday, April 8. Services will be held at New Zion United Methodist Church, 7169 Salem Road, New Zion, SC 29111 at 1:00 PM on April 9. Burial will follow at New Zion UMC Cemetery. The family will be greeting friends and relatives immediately following at the church fellowship hall.
