Former Olanta Fire Chief dies Ledell McKenzie Olanta- Ledell McKenzie age 78, retired Olanta Fire Chief, died September 22, 2013 at his home after an illness. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Tuesday at Floyd Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Lake City Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 6 - 8 PM Monday at the funeral home. Born in Florence County, he was a son of the late Horace Junior McKenzie and Elizabeth Cleo Bingham McKenzie. He was a charter member of Olanta Fire Department where he served as Chief for 25 years, he also served as town maintenance manager, former Police Chief, and was a charter member of Olanta Business Association where he received many awards for his service and dedication, he also received the Giving Your Best Award from WBTW, was also former owner of B & B Grocery. He was married to Thelma Weaver McKenzie and they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on September 18. He was preceded in death by a son, Randy Lee McKenzie, two brothers, Howard McKenzie and Benjamin McKenzie. Surviving are his wife, Thelma Weaver McKenzie of Olanta, a daughter, Sandra McKenzie Scurry of Olanta, a son, Robert (Thedis) McKenzie of Olanta, two brothers, Rev. Berry (Joyce) McKenzie of Turbeville, and Bobby ( Stacey) McKenzie of Raeford, Fl. Four grandchildren and eight great-grand children .
