Margueritte Butler Lynchburg Margueritte Thompson Butler, 88, wife of the late W.A. (Bill) Butler, passed away Thursday, April 19, 2012, after a long illness. The family will receive friends 6:00 - 8:00 PM Saturday, April 21st, at Floyd Funeral Home in Olanta. Funeral services will be at 4:00 PM Sunday, at Sardis Baptist Church, 3129 Sardis Highway, Timmonsville, S.C. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Butler was born January 16, 1924, in Olanta, a daughter of the late Samuel Bynum and Clara Bell Thompson. She graduated from Olanta High School and Winthrop College where she majored in Elementary Education. She taught at Sardis School, Olanta Elementary, and Hudgens Academy where she was loved and respected by her students. She was a member of Sardis Baptist Church and served in many positions of leadership. At Sardis she was a part of the Adult Choir, Prayer Group, and Gleaners Sunday School Class. Mrs. Butler was a former member of the Olanta Garden Club, Sumter County Farm Bureau, Pomona Grange, and Delta Kappa Gamma, Psi Chapter. She was known as an excellent school teacher, church worker, accomplished seamstress, and for being very artistic. She enjoyed traveling and camping with her husband, brother, and sister-in-law. Many family fun times were had at her Santee lake house. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who will be greatly missed. Surviving are her daugher, Anne (Lyle) Carraway of Lynchburg, sons, Rhett (Marcia) Butler of Cheraw, and Allison Butler of Conway, five grandchildren, Lori Anne (Chalmers) Carr, Rhett (Anne) Butler II, Brantley (Joe Don) Reames, Allie (Kevin) Duckworth, and Amber Butler, two great grandchildren, Chalmers Carr IV, and Carly Anne Carr, a brother, Henry O'Neil Thompson of Chapin, S.C. Mrs. Butler was preceded in death by her brothers, Samuel B. and Dalma A. Thompson, a sister, Rosalie DuRant, and grandson, W. Brent Butler. Memorials may be made to Sardis Baptist Church Building Fund, 3129 Sardis Highway, Timmonsville, S.C. 29161 and March of Dimes Upstate, 37 Villa Road, B123, Greenville, S.C. 29615.
