SUMTER – Mildred Irene Porter Gowdy, 89, widow of John D. Gowdy, died Saturday, December 4, 2021, at Prisma Health Tuomey Sumter. Born September 18, 1932, in Dillon, she was a daughter of the late Luther Victor Porter, Sr. and the late Mary Bonnie Jackson Porter. She was a member of Pine Dale Pentecostal Holiness Church and in later years attended Christian Tabernacle. She was retired from Pioneer Dress Company in Sumer. She is survived by one son, James David “J.D.” Gowdy of Sumter; one daughter, Lynda Gayle Field (Carll) of Sumter; three grandchildren, Carll C. Field, Jr. (Kim), Jamey Gowdy (Laura) and Shannon Oberle (Brandon); six great grandchildren, Daylin, Dalton, Kaylee, Diana, Elijah, Violet; one sister, Murielene Caulder of Marion; two brothers-in-law, Donnie Pridgen and Lonnie Cox; two sister-in-laws, Kay Porter and Faye Porter;and two special nieces, Charlotte Tisdale and Vicki Porter. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 60 years, seven brothers, Horace Porter, Luther Porter, Hubert Porter, Elliot Porter, Norman Porter, Heyward Porter, and Lynwood Porter; and two sisters, Muriel Pridgen and Mary Cox. A funeral service will be held 11 A.M. on Monday, December 6, 2021, in the Chapel of Floyd Funeral Home with Rev. Trey Belangia officiating. Burial will follow in the Pine Dale Pentecostal Holiness Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 2 – 4 P.M. on Sunday, December 5, 2021, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers the family request that memorials be made to Christian Tabernacle, 3018 Us Highway 15, Sumter, SC 29154 or to the charity of one’s choice.
