Olanta James Ernest "Ernie" Ard, age 76, passed away peacefully at his home Tuesday, November 27, 2018. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, and high school sweetheart, Linda McGee Ard of Olanta, and a son, James E. Ard, "J. E." of the home. Parents were Ernest Adel Ard and Margaret Highsmith Ard. He was voted the "Most Athletic" by the Olanta High School Class of 1962 stemming from his outstanding pitching record on the baseball team; this interest was followed further by playing for the Oakland "A" Farm Club in Florida after school. He had an avid interest in hunting, and fishing and was a member of the Nelson & Wilson Hunting Club, and was well known for his deer hunting records and love of the outdoor activities. He, his father, and son were known as the family of third generation sportsmen. They enjoyed many hours together being involved in these activities. He worked for 28 years at Union Carbide/ESAB as an inspector, a tool grinder and tool crib manager; after retirement, he worked part-time at H. D.'s Quick Stop. Olanta Baptist Church was the church where he placed his membership as a child. Visitation will be at Floyd Funeral Home from 6-8pm, Thursday, November 29, 2018, and other times at the home, 122 Moore Street in Olanta. Funeral services will be held 2 pm Friday, November 30, 2018, at Floyd Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Olanta Baptist Church Cemetery.
