New Zion - Lawrence Ike Gibbons age 94, passed away peacefully March 01, 2019 at his home. Services will be held at 3 PM Sunday, March 3, 2019 at New Zion United Methodist Church, visitation will be held Saturday, March 2nd, 2019 from 5 pm to 7 pm at his home, 7386 Salem Road, New Zion, SC, directed by Floyd Funeral Home of Olanta. Burial will be at New Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery. Born in Clarendon County he was a son of the late William Lawrence Gibbons and Tura Ethel Bush Gibbons. Mr. Ike, retired from Farmers Home Administration, graduated from Salem Schools and attended Clemson University until he was called to serve in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a member of New Zion United Methodist Church, the Turbeville Ruritan, and the Black River American Legion Post #149. Mr. Ike served in the Navy during WWII from 1943-1945 on the LST 803 and served in the Pacific and took part in battles Okinawa. He was recognized by the Dept. of Transportation for cutting grass and trash pick-up along Salem Road. He was recognized by Alex Harvin with a Resolution from the SC House of Representatives for Community Service. Mr. Ike was recognized as Clarendon County Citizen of the year in 2013. He farmed tobacco, cotton, corn, and soybeans until 1972 and worked for Farmers Home Administration as County Supervisor, where he was recognized as Director of the year and retired in 1996. Mr. Ike served as Civil Defense Director in Clarendon County, served on the Clarendon County Draft Board, and served on the Salem Academy Board of Directors. He was recognized in February 2019 by Senator Johnson and Representative Ridgeway for contributions to the Veterans Administration. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Ann McNeill Gibbons; two sisters, Carrie Fleming and Peggy Boswell; one half-brother, Curtis Gibbons. He is survived by three daughters; Patty Green of New Zion, Sherrilyn and her husband Blake Gibbons of New Zion, Lauretta Gibbons and her husband Virgil Lynn of Fort Mill, SC; one sister Lillie (Lil) McElveen of Lake City; five grandchildren, Jennifer Gibbons Altman, Patrick and his wife Leslie Gibbons, Lance Green, Travis Green, and Devin Green; and seven great-grandchildren, Blake Altman, Banks Altman, Spencer Gibbons, Evie Gibbons, Lauren Elizabeth Green, Luke Green, Katherine Grace Green.
