Lake City - Steven “Steve” Merriett Chavis, 54, died Saturday, May 29, 2021 at his residence. Born May 22, 1967 in Timmonsville he was a son of James Edward Chavis and the late Ellen Daniels Chavis. He was a true man of God who loved his family and friends. He was a roofer by trade and loved the job path he chose and all the people he worked with. When Steve wasn’t working, you could find him fishing in the swamps or rivers. He also loved riding around and looking for fields or anywhere he might find an arrowhead. He is survived by his father; two brothers, Bernie Chavis (Debbie) of Canton, NC and Rick Sims (Linda) of Florida; one sister, Mary Lou Browder (Glenn) of Lake City; and a number of nieces, nephews and special friends. He was preceded in death by his mother and a brother, Jimmy Foot Chavis. A graveside service will be held 10am on Wednesday, June 2, 2021, in the New Town Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Dustin Driggers officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers the family request that memorials be made to the Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church, 1234 Morris Street, Lake City, SC 29560. Honorary Pallbearers will be, Jay Browder and James Chavis. Active Pallbearers will be, Brandon Thigpen, Billy McElveen, George Green, Bryson Yarborough, Freddy Reynolds, and Wil Chavis. COVID-19 are precautions of face masks and social distancing are required at the visitation and service. Floyd Funeral Home, 136 E. Main Street, Olanta, is in charge of the arrangements.
