As the family sang “Amazing Grace,” Mr. Nauvard Lloyd Baker, 91, of Cades had his faith made sight as he entered the presence of his Lord and Savior on August 19, 2023. Nauvard, born January 1, 1932, was the son of the late Lloyd F. and Clytie Baker. Throughout his life, Nauvard was a man marked by faithfulness. First and foremost, he was a faithful follower and servant of Jesus. He attended Horse Branch Free Will Baptist Church for 70 years, where he was a dedicated deacon for over 40 years and a committed Sunday School teacher for more than 6 decades, using his knowledge as both a student and teacher of the Word to edify others. His life evidenced his love for Jesus through his willingness to serve as both Sunday School director and CTS director of the church. Nauvard, whose name means helper, was also faithful to his country. While serving in the US Air Force during the Korean conflict, his troop was without a chaplain. He quickly volunteered to help by leading services for his unit, receiving the commendation of his commanding officer. After his service to his country, he became a farmer and later a carpenter. He loved to aid the people around him whether through working as a polling attendant, serving his neighbors with his carpentry skills, or blessing people through his heartfelt poetic notes. Nauvard was also a faithful husband, father, father-in-law, and granddad. He enjoyed sharing stories, watching birds, telling jokes, and eating dessert. In quiet constancy, he unwaveringly served his God, his family, and his neighbors. He is predeceased by his wife, Nell Green Baker; a brother, Curtis Baker; and a sister, Winifred Crawford. He is survived by two sons, Andy (Wanda) Baker of Cades, and Lloyd (Danielle) Baker of Lake City; three daughters, Vickie (Scott) Poston of Scranton, Cathy (Thurman) Springs of Lake City, and Pam (Stan) Coker of Woodlawn, TN; nine grandchildren, Stacey (Jimmy) Lightfoot, Mandi (Neil) Morgan, Lindsey Springs, Brantley (Erin) Baker, Hope (Lonnie) Lane, Ashley (John) Brummitt, Ana (Craig) Batts, Adam Coker, Amanda (Mike) Caprarola, Evan Baker, Jillian Poston, and John Scott Poston; eighteen great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Mary Von Baker. A visitation will be held from 6 – 8 PM on Monday, August 21, 2023, in the sanctuary of Horse Branch Free Will Baptist Church. A funeral service will be held 11 AM on Tuesday, August 22, 2023, at Horse Branch Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Theron Scott and Rev. Stan Coker officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family request that memorials be made to The Neil & Mandi Morgan Missions Fund in care of Horse Branch Free Will Baptist Church, 1097 Horse Branch Road, Turbeville, South Carolina, 29162.
