It is with great sadness that the family of Phillip Purvis Coker announce his passing on April 16, 2019, in Turbeville, from congestive heart failure. Born in Florence County, Sept. 26, 1938, he was the son of the late Cleo Richard Coker and Natalie Purvis Coker. He was co-owner and dragline operator for Coker Drainage Company. He was a member of Turbeville First Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, Training Union Director, was a recipient of the Smyrna Award and assisted in Homecoming and recreation events. He attended public schools and was a graduate from East Clarendon High School in 1959. Mr. Coker was preceded in death by two sisters; Dena Jo Coker, and Alyce Coker (Jimmie) Player. Surviving is his devoted and loving wife of 58 years, the former Betty Ann White of Olanta, SC; two daughters, Phyllis (Derek) Gowdy of Camden, South Carolina, Melissa (Ronnie) Porter of Monroe, North Carolina; and one granddaughter Natalie Grace Porter of Monroe, North Carolina. Funeral services will be held at 4 pm, Thursday, April 18, 2019, at Turbeville First Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Turbeville First Baptist Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6 pm to 8 pm, Wednesday, April 17, 2019, at Turbeville First Baptist Church. The family wishes to give a special thanks to Amedisys Hospice staff, Dee Stegall, Dell Muller, Tanya Smith, Beebe Coker, and caregiver Ethel Garland and Ernestine Baker for their loving care.
