William "Smitty" Smith

William Eugene "Smitty" Smith Lake City Mr. William Smith, age 92, of Lake City, formerly of Fredericksburg, Virginia died Monday, June 13, 2011 at a Florence hospital after an illness. Funeral services will be 11am, Friday, June 17, 2011 at Floyd Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Thomas Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-8pm Thursday, June 16, 2011 at the funeral home. Born in Remington, Virginia, he was a son of the late William Stacey Smith and Lola A. Day Smith. He attended Calvary Baptist Church in Lake City and was a member of the Elk's Lodge in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Mr. Smith entered the United States Army in 1942. He became the first civilian named as Executive Officer in military title denoting second in command, he received numerous awards including the second and third highest awards the United States Army can present to a civilian. After serving 38 years in the Army, he received the Commander's Award for Civilian Service, citing his "intense devotion to duty, vast knowledge of management skills and high sense of responsibility." Mr. Smith thoroughly enjoyed working in his yards and gardening. He is preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Edenton Smith. A sister, Louise S. Pritchett. Surviving is a daughter, Vicki (John) Fitch of Lake City. Four nephews, Rolfe Pritchett, Herbert Pritchett, William A. Marrs and Ray Payne. A niece, Linda Edenton Taylor. A special cousin that he claimed as his other daughter, Laura Lee Smith.
